Typography Lexicon
Student Brief

The brief requires the submission of a typography lexicon book. The topic thereafter is an open brief and students were able to explore the limits of a typography lexicon.

A lexicon in similar to a dictionary or a glossary. It contains information regarding the topic or the subject and elaborates upon the facts. The assignment that was given is a lexicon of typography. Upon researching more into typography, I’ve chosen to explore the diacritics side of glyphs as it stroke me as a very interesting topic for a Malaysian as we don’t often see diacritics being used in Malaysia that often.
These are all the diacritics found in roman letters. Each diacritic denotes different accents and breathings. English does not have many words with the usage of diacritics. However, there are a lot of loanwords from French and Spanish that appear with the diacritics of English. Examples of diacritics present in English: soufflé, café, resume.

I am suggesting a lexicon that educates the usage of diacritics while showcasing the beauty of the type. I want the lexicon to communicate common used Malaysian slang in diacritics to educate Malaysians the usage of diacritics as well as showing the proper way of pronouncing Malaysian slangs to foreign readers.

The aim of this lexicon is to have the readers understand the proper usage of diacritics as well as having the essence of Malaysian poured into it. Making it suitable for both local and foreign to enjoy reading this lexicon.
I’ve selected a few words from the Malaysian common tongue of Manglish (Malaysian-English) in order to have the essence of Malaysian into my content of the Lexicon. These are the common Malaysian slangs used at a daily basis by most Malaysians:

Ah Moi
Alamak
Angmor
Ci ncai

It was clear that I needed a font that has a strong personality as well as being a clear and understandable font. It also needs the required diacritic marks in order to complete my goal for this book. The ideal font should be of the Sans Serif family with a huge family with different weights.
